NPD is the leader in syndicated tracking services across more than 20 industries, and also offers a host of other data sources and solutions, as well as industry expertise to give clients a winning advantage. NPD is the only Canadian source for tracking sales-out data in the B2B technology channel, with sales information from top distributors.
Cloud infrastructure and platform as a service led software market growth in 2018, according to NPD
In the 12 months ending August 2018, the Canadian B2B indirect software market grew 12 percent year over year, outpacing B2B indirect hardware growth by five percentage points, according to The NPD Group. The segment experiencing the strongest growth during this time period, cloud infrastructure and platform as a service software, increased 45 percent, according NPD’s new Canadian B2B Software and Cloud Tracking Service.
The storage and data protection segment was not far behind with 40 percent growth followed by business applications with 16 percent growth. The categories in the storage and data protection software segment with the highest year-over-year revenue growth were storage utilities management (+55 percent) and data protection and recovery (+23 percent).
IT operations and networking software makes up the largest dollar share of all B2B software and cloud services sales. Within this segment, the monitoring and management software category saw dollar sales increase 4 percent, as businesses look for greater management oversight.
“Traditionally, growth of software within the cloud infrastructure and platform as a service segment has mainly been attributed to large resellers; however, the small VAR segment was the second fastest growing category with a 20 percent increase year over year. This suggests that the SMB market is also embracing enterprise-grade solutions” said Ali Naqvi, Director, IT Retail & Commercial businesses for The NPD Group Canada. “With continued SMB growth, we anticipate increased involvement of distributors in connecting leading-edge solutions to the resellers who serve the market.”
